2 Days

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Tonight the weekend begins. Hope you enjoy your 2 days.

Received some good news this morning (new roommate moving in to our Venice cottage, hooray!).

Anxiously awaiting the return of a certain someone who has been camping in the wilderness all week.

Here are a few random images from out and about in LA:

Heart Art

The Standard is a pretty quirky hotel. In their online shop, they have these limited edition posters…I love the colors in both of these prints by local artist Michael Motorcycle (cool name?!):

A lot has been written about Gjelina (pronounced ja-leena). It’s one of LA’s best (and hippest) new restaurants. There’s plenty of accolades for the chef, Travis Letts, and his way with the wood-burning oven (all well-deserved, too). And its very hard to get a reservation.

Gjelina has been a welcome addition to the superb dining corridor that is Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice. I am lucky to live just a few blocks down the road. You can read all about the chef and the menu, but trust me when I say, go to Gjelina, the food is good, you will enjoy it. Its great for a celebratory event, when friends come to visit or a nice romantic date.

My all-stars from the EAT LOCAL – HOME GROWN seasonal menu:

- Grilled Pears with Grilled Treviso, Burrata, Speck & Balsamic

- Wood roasted Sunchokes with Salsa Verde

- All of the pizzas from the wood burning oven

- Grilled Niman Ranch Hanger Steak with Roasted Turnip, Beet & Smoked Tomato Butter

- Maitake Mushroom Toast with Creme Fraiche & Truffle Oil

Below:

The butterscotch pudding with sea salt & fresh whipped cream (second only to Pizzeria Mozza). Amazing!

The rustic (and very crowded) dining room

Artisan Cheeses with Marinated Olives, Honeycomb, Membrillo & Toasts

Gruyere, Caramelized Onion, Fromage Blanc & Arugula Pizza

Rumor ’round the Blvd is that Chef Travis is opening a “vegetable only” restaurant upstairs from Gjelina. Can’t wait…

Ok, but just a taste…

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Well, LA hasn’t washed away just yet but for sure the hottest accessory on last night’s red carpet was an umbrella. Later this week we will have a full recap of all the LA Fashion Week hits and misses but today we’re a little sleepy and rain soaked so we’re giving you just a nibble from last night’s show at MOCA/Geffen.

Fashion’s Night Out

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

fashions-night-out-sept-10

You might have heard of Fashion’s Night Outa global celebration of fashion this Thursday, September 10, 2009. In an initiative to promote retail, restore consumer confidence, and celebrate fashion, U.S. and international editions of Vogue are coordinating evening extravaganzas in their respective world fashion capitals. You can read an article on Anna Wintour’s feelings behind FNO here.

Basically, the brands + designers are planning special events + appearances at their stores to promote shopping and to kick off the first night of New York Fashion Week. And although it is focused in NYC, check out the website for events near you!

On a charitable note, there is a citywide Clothing Drive, encouraging New Yorkers and visitors to donate new and/or gently used clothing. The donations will be given to the NYC AIDS Fund, and distributed to approximately 17 AIDS-related charities throughout New York City’s five boroughs. If you are not in NY, consider donating to your local AIDS charity.

Here are a list of some fun events to check out:

  • NYC: List of all (over 700!) participating Designers & Retailers
  • NYC: Anna Wintour t-shirt signing at Macy’s Queens location
  • West Hollywood: 3.1 Phillip Lim releasing five new designs based on pieces from his archive
  • Melrose/Robertson/Beverly Hills: 27 events at Fred SegalTrina Turk, and Maxfield, Neiman Marcus and many more
  • Santa Monica: TOMS Shoes + Trovata host family reunion event, come dressed up + enjoy photo booths + enter to win a $1,000 shopping spree
  • Trovata_TOMS FNO FINAL

    Happy Shopping!
