Looking for a meaningful way to support non-profits in your area without having to donate financially?  Here is an easy way to help the hundreds of homeless dogs and cats in your neighborhood rescues…clean out your linen closet and donate any old towels, sheets or blankets you might no longer use to your local shelter.  Recent budget cuts and massive overcrowding have made it difficult for shelters to provide blankets or towels for their animals. Many of the these incarcerated animals spend all day sleeping on the cold concrete and have a pretty bleak future; a warm place to lay their scruffy head seems like the least we can do.

Every year J + I  have a holiday party where we say for no gifts, just ratty old towels and blankets which I collect in a huge bin outside our door and then deliver to the West LA Animal Shelter. We decided to not have a party this year so this is a virtual party where I am asking my virtual friends to donate to their local shelters!

2009 has been a tough year for families and that includes our four legged family members as well. Thousands of companion animals will be abandoned, neglected or abused this year and while we might not all have the financial resources to support these very important organizations, donating your old linens is such a simple way to give.

If you live in the Los Angeles area click here for the LA Animal Services website to locate the shelter closest to you. Click here for a link to the ASPCA and here for the North Shore Animal League. If you are interested in donating linens to your local shelter but having trouble finding them email me at c at paisleypetunia dot com and I will help connect you to the right place.

Here is a picture of one of my three rescue dogs, Mindy. She was a “red list” dog which meant she probably had only days to live. Today, she is a happy, well-adjusted member of our pack and I can’t imagine it any other way.

A Cause For Celebration

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Birthdays are always a great cause for celebration. Going back to our school days, wasn’t it fun that to celebrate your birthday by bringing cupcakes for your fellow classmates. It made you feel special. Don’t you think giving back to others is a great way to honor the day you were born?

My good friend Sloane of the blog Causemopolitan and her friend Doug of Mindshare have a pretty significant birthday coming up next week – the big 3-0. Sloane + Doug decided instead of just throwing a party for themselves, they wanted to make a BIG impact (and still have a lot of fun). So they called their friends together and we decided to throw a big bash – but this is not your ordinary birthday party:

It’s 7 parties in 7 days across 7 cities in the US!

Birthday Tour Begins Tomorrow!

NYC–>Miami–>New Orleans–>Chicago–>Seattle–>San Francisco–>LA

With each stop we are bringing awareness to Malaria prevention and raising money to send an entire container (that’s 16,000 preventative nets) to Northern Ghana. At $5/net its a huge fundraising goal of $70,000.

Why Malaria you might ask? Well, let’s think about it for a second:

One child dies of malaria every 30 seconds, and ONE net is only $5. That’s not a lot, right? Oh and Malaria is preventable, people!

The developed world knows less about malaria than the developing world merely because malaria is not a problem here in the United States. Humans are at war with malaria, and malaria is winning, killing 3,000 children every day! Malaria has killed more people than all wars combined. Netting Nations believes that shelter is a fundamental human right, and that everyone deserves a net, and a chance at life.

Please join me in the fight against malaria at CauseItsMyBirthday.com:

I am involved as one of 4 fabulous Los Angeles Hosts. When I first heard about Sloane’s crazy idea, I knew immediately I had to be a part of it. LA is the last stop on the 7 day Birthday Tour (starting tomorrow – Doug’s actual birthday) and we plan to make it a huge event!

(p.s. disclaimer, no one is making any money on this soiree, its 100% donations directly to NettingNations.org. Sloane + Doug paid for their own flights + stuff)

Its really exciting to think that together with as little donations as $5 each, we can save lives. With all the challenges and causes in the world, its amazing to think that Malaria is preventable.

To date, we have had great response:

Happy Happiest Birthdays to you, Sloane! May this year be your best year yet – I am so proud of you and can’t wait to see you next Friday! And Doug, party on, my friend. Looking forward to celebrating with you both!
