Post Script (UPDATED)

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009
Dear email, Google Wave, i chat, instant messenger, Facebook pokes and Twitter tweets…
What have you done to us?  What did we ever do to you? We’re so pretty and personal and meaningful and lasting and you’ve gone and made everyone think everything is just about short and generic and digital.
We’ll be back. (You can write that one down.)
Signed,
Handwritten notes

Helping handwritten letters and notes stage their comeback is whimsical designer Erin Condren. I’ve been buying her delightful note cards since I got married 3 years ago and one day I was telling S about this great little card designer from the South Bay with the cutest little cards and blah blah blah and she was like “Oh, you mean Erin Condren? I love her.”  Guess we really are 2 peas in a pod! Of course now, EC is all over the place Lucky, Daily Candy, everyone is giddy about her stuff.  (We gave one lucky reader a May Day gift from EC.)

Erin’s designs are bright, modern and affordable. (You may remember my day of mourning over the loss of Mrs. John L. Strong one of the most amazing (but really expensive!!) stationers who sadly succumb to the weak economy and the shrinking number of people who actually write letters and cards.)  *Sniffle*

Anyway, no excuses anymore! Erin Condren has just about every sort of personalized correspondence you’ll need and they don’t cost half your grocery budget. She has recently added photo cards to her lineup and she has a cute line of cards and invites at Target right now (click here to check it out.)   I’m a huge fan of the 100 hearts card (so don’t surprised if you get one from me this year) and S has the sweetest little thank you cards.  Plus, her card sets come with really cute address labels which put those plain white laser jet jobs to shame. And I just discovered she does personalized wrapping paper, how cool is that!

Days of Wine and Roses-Femme Noir at LA Fashion Week

Friday, October 30th, 2009
Dress Name

Forget-me-not

S + and I were so lucky to attend 3 of the 4 days of Downtown LA Fashion Week. We are definitely fashion lovers and are just over the moon at slowly becoming fashion bloggers.  Shows never get old. Even when the clothes are bizarre or unrelatable, there is something magic about the lights, the energy, the music and the creative genius it takes to design an entire collection. I don’t have to like the garments to be  in awe of the designers, creators, artists. Thank you for being gifted, for never giving up on the creative life and for sharing it with us.

Anyway, sometimes it’s hard to recap a collection. Not being a professional fashion journalist we can only talk in layman terms about what we see and what we like/don’t like. However, in the case of Femme Noir by Phong Hong, we can’t stop talking. The collection was breathtaking. From the beautiful shape of the dresses to the abundant details, it is clear designer Phong has loads of talent and an incredible grasp of how to make a woman look beautiful. The rich wine color is one of my favs and the petal soft nude is so feminine without being too sugary. The whole collection translates to restrained decadence.

We would wear every single piece in the collection (of course a 44″ inseam like some of the models would make it even easier to wear these dresses but still) and I am certain we will have that opportunity soon enough. No doubt Femme Noir is going to be seen on runways, red carpets and in retail for a long time to come.

The finale dress was literally breathtaking, you could hear the audible gasps over the pulsing music. Impeccable detail.

Designer Spotlight: boos&besito *updated*

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Today’s guest blogger is my coworker and friend, Claudia. Each day I marvel and constantly compliment her creative and inspiring sense of style. I so wish I could put things together and pull them off like Claudia. Her smile and warm personality, while not material, add to this sparkling and fun presence. Since she is always turning me on to new designers and trends, today I asked her to give us the inside scoop on a new favorite brand started here in Los Angeles, boos&besito:

So a few weeks ago my roommate was telling me about his girlfriends – Alejandra Hernandez & Rana Shoar –  and how much I would love their line of accessories. He also extended an invite to their friends & family sale where I got to meet the lovely ladies behind boos&besito! As I’m talking to them and checking out their stuff, I realized that I wanted to write about them for Paisley Petunia. Here are a few questions I asked so all you ladies can get to know these ladies a little better!

CM: What is you inspiration?

B&B: We’re  not the kind of designers that draw inspiration by something we’ve seen, it’s more drawn from feelings and personal style. Like, we make things we want to wear but can’t find anywhere, items that don’t exist. Things that we’re really feeling at the time.  Our line doesn’t have seasons….we just make things whenever we want. and everything is a limited run, so once its sold out…..its sold out.

Single Shoe Blossoms to add flair to add pair of shoes you already have

CM: What are some fun stuff that people would want to know about you two?

B&B: We both go all over the country to find the best vintage.  We sell to vintage stores and boutiques all over the world, but also sell to local girls out of our studio and at  flea markets. 95% of everything we sell is altered. We have a million other jobs – we do styling, buying, consulting, trend forecasting, designing, and even product development for other companies. We both have different backgrounds in the industry. Rana being a buyer and owning 2 clothing stores in downtown LA, and I have a design and development background, working for companies like rojas and patricia field. We aspire to be bi-coastal and open our own tiny boutique in New York City within the next year or two.

CM: Why did you name your label boos&besito & how long ago did you two start the line?

B&B: We named the line boos&besito because it represents our love for our cultures. Boos means kiss in Farsi, Rana’s family is Persian, besito means little kiss in Spanish, my family is Argentinian and Peruvian. Though we grew up speaking different languages our families are so similar. In a society that thinks of middle eastern and latino people being a certain way, we both come from the polar opposite of that view society has set. Our families are equally wild and super open minded. Our culture is what makes us unique and keeps us very connected. We have a strong understanding for why we are who we are. We were taught the same morals and the same exact views on social and political issues.

We’ve been making things and selling them for over a year now, but launched boos&besito at the pool tradeshow in feb. 09.

about your guest blogger: Claudia.

Claudia was inspired at a young age by her mother’s style – She was what I call Va Va Voom, meaning the feeling you get when you’re filled with inspiration or full of excitement and energy! Always was on top of her game wearing the latest fashions from Chanel to St. John, I would always sneak into her closet & dream about one day being able to wear all her clothes! From every little barbie dress that we designed together with the help of my mother’s friend Maria, who worked at this store called Tres Mariposas, a beautiful store located in El Paso, Texas, where I was born and raised, my mother & I would always coordinate my outfits from head to toe! Before she passed away we both dreamt about opening our own boutique, I will follow those steps one day! I leave you with one of my all time favorite quotes: A fashion that does not reach the streets is not a fashion ~ Coco Chanel.
