DO FUN STUFF

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Aloha & Mahalo. I’m back. We had a wonderful time, but sadly while I was gone I missed the big launch day for the the DO FUN STUFF charity album that I had been looking forward to. Here it is, better late than never:

I love this guy’s blog (www.pacingthepanicroom.blogspot.com) and the maternity series he did for his wife & baby (seen here). Since his son was diagnosed with a very rare condition, he has worked tirelessly to produce this album of kids music (that adults will love too). ALL proceeds go to fund research for Smith Magenis Syndrome.

Please listen & buy this album:

One Hope Wines

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Wine + Chocolate is a pretty sweet pairing.

Wine + Chocolate + Charity is a perfect match.

At yesterday’s meeting of book club, Alexis hosted a ONEHOPE Wine tasting. This month’s book selection was Chocolat by Joanne Harris and in staying with the theme, Alexis coordinated a red wine flight with complementary chocolates. Think Merlot with chunks of milk chocolate, Cab with dark chocolate and Zinfandel with chocolate covered fruit. It was divine…and 50% of the $10/person fee is donated to the 8 charity partners of ONEHOPE Wines.

ONEHOPE Wines was started to help out a friend with her fight against cancer but has turned into a thriving business, founded on a very basic, but compelling principle: giving back is good business. ONEHOPE isn’t a charity, but a for-profit enterprise that donates 50% of profits to 8 partner charities through the creation of cause specific varietals of wine.

Our host Haley led us through 3 tastes of red wines and then we enjoyed a glass or three of our favorite. Our group loved the wines, the mission behind the organization and we were instantly inspired to get more involved.

During the months of September and October, ONEHOPE is coordinating breast cancer awareness parties. As the host, you invite your friends, provide the glasses and the food, while ONEHOPE brings the wine (at no cost). Just for hosting, they will donate $100 to your choice of their 8 foundation partners (causes include AIDS, Autism, Cancer, the Environment and the Troops).  They will also donate an additional 10% of wine sales from the party towards breast cancer. If you are interested, you can sign up directly at www.onehopewine.com/hopeathome or contact Haley Harris at (866) 983-2266.

Our book club will be hosting an event in the LA area, stay tuned for more details. Sadly, each of us was easily able to list many friends and family members affected by breast cancer. I am personally committed to this cause in honor of my aunt’s recent experience with breast cancer and I hope you will get involved too!

One Day on Earth Participant Trailer from One Day On Earth on Vimeo.

I am excited to share the video for the One Day On Earth project. My friend Gina (who guest posted her story and photos here) just joined the production team and their goal it is to create an accurate picture of what daily life on this planet is like.  They are enlisting individuals to document the shared human experience of twenty four hours on earth.  And it all goes down on the historic date of 10-10-10.

One Day On Earth is bringing people together from all over the planet to answer the question:“If you could document something to share with the world, what would you film?”

So far, the participants range from Academy Award nominated documentary producers to NASA to school children of remote areas of the third world and nonprofits like Shine on Sierra Leone, Rally for Iraq and more.

Interested? Signup to participate at www.onedayonearth.org.

You can get involved by joining this online community of filmmakers, students, and inspired individuals who are partnering to film in every country in the world during the 24-hour period.

The event will culminate in the production of a monumental documentary and video archive with the hope that by capturing these human struggles and triumphs that unite us, there will be greater understanding and global empathy.

Actors Needed: Monday March 15th 12:00-2:30pm to volunteer at The Young Storytellers Foundation.

The YSF offers a uniquely engaging and effective arts education and youth development program at elementary schools around Los Angeles where students are at-risk or have little access to the arts. The children have been working on their projects for months and now they need some actors to help perform their works!

If you can’t make it on Monday, but still want to get involved contact Ashley at aedavis@ymail.com to learn more about volunteering.

Mentor: It only takes one hour a week, during your lunch break, anytime, to mentor a Young Storyteller. They’ll place you at a nearby school and teach you everything you need to know. www.youngstorytellers.com

National Pancake Day

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I love Pancakes.

fun fun colorful pancakes from I am Mommy Blog*

I have always been a sweet breakfast person. As a child my favorite order was blueberry pancakes, topped with more blueberries and a scoop of blueberry ice cream on top, oh and a big dollop of whipped cream.

Today IHOP is offering free pancakes for everyone – and asking you to make a donation. Their goal is to raise $5Million in 5 years. Don’t you want to be a part of the Pancake eating fundraising fun? I’ll be there for dinner, if you’d like to meet up. Breakfast for dinner…oh yeah.

Here’s more information: http://www.ihoppancakeday.com/

Join IHOP to celebrate National Pancake Day on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., we’ll give you one free short stack (three) of our famous buttermilk pancakes. All we ask is that you consider making a donation to support local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network, or other local charities.

*I am Mommy’s post caught a lot of flack in mean, judgmental comments from unsupportive readers. Please try to remember – if you don’t have something nice to say, please don’t say anything at all. I think making rainbow pancakes is awesome and you have my support! xoxo
